Just like us, our pets require dental care too! At Allambie Vet, our focus is on prevention of dental disease. The health of their teeth and gums has a significant impact on their overall quality of life. Just like humans, this means regular brushing and occasional dental cleaning (scale and polish, under general anaesthesia). Some pets are more predisposed to dental disease and require additional care such as dietary changes, special chews and more frequent cleaning to prevent decay and tooth loss.

Our veterinarians are extremely experienced in pet dentistry with access to the latest dental equipment including new dental machines, dental radiography and surgical extraction equipment.

We offer FREE Dental Health Checks with one of our veterinarians.

Do pets need constant expensive dental care?

Like any other aspect of pet health, dental care needs ongoing attention and maintenance. Costs associated with dentistry increase when dental extractions are needed. In order to try and avoid this, we recommend regular free dental checks with our veterinarians. This will enable them to develop a preventative plan for that specific pet, because let’s face it, not every dog or cat is going to let you brush their teeth!

Like people, not every pet is the same and unfortunately, some pets are more predisposed to periodontal disease. It is well recognised that small breed dogs often need more dental care and that cats can develop feline oral resorptive lesions.

What is the best way to clean my pet’s teeth?

The best way to clean your pet’s teeth is with a pet toothbrush or a mini tooth brush designed for small children. There is even pet toothpaste that comes in a range of flavours! Both of these are available for purchase at Allambie Vet. Do not use human toothpastes as they contain fluoride and occasionally xylitol, both of which are toxic to pets.
