We’re excited to announce the arrival of a new and improved leptospirosis vaccine at Allambie Vet. This vaccine offers advanced protection against leptospirosis, an important step in keeping our pets safe and healthy. The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) now recommends the leptospirosis vaccination as a core vaccination for dogs, making it an essential part of their annual healthcare routine.
What is Leptospirosis?
Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that can infect both dogs and humans. It spreads through water, soil, and urine from infected animals, like rats. Dogs can be exposed by drinking from contaminated water sources, such as puddles or ponds, or through contact with infected soil. The disease can affect a dog’s kidneys and liver, and in severe cases, it can be life-threatening if left untreated.
Why This Vaccine Is Superior?
The new leptospirosis vaccine provides broader coverage:
Transitioning to the New Vaccine
Here’s how we’re managing the transition:
New Puppies or Overdue Dogs:
All new puppies and adult dogs needing a leptospirosis vaccine will receive the new Leptospirosis vaccine.
Dogs Previously Vaccinated with Another Leptospirosis Vaccine:
We recommend transitioning to the new leptospirosis vaccine for dogs previously receiving an older version. This transition will require restarting the vaccination course, which involves giving an initial dose followed by a booster vaccination four weeks later. If the transition occurs when a booster or annual is due, the second dose will be provided at no charge to facilitate the changeover for our clients.
